Our Teaching Approach
Our top priority is to create a supportive learning environment. I take a gentle approach that is attentive to student needs, we are flexible when they are having a tough day or week or season, and I meet them where they are at, supporting them as they need whenever we can connect. We don't do shaming, but treat each other with respect and care; I am there to come alongside the student and support, be honest about the process and challenges, and problem solve everything together. We lean into the student's personality, communicate in ways they are comfortable, pause our work to hear a story from their week, laugh together at the piano, cheer them through the tougher concepts and skills, and celebrate every time they try.
The goal of the lesson content is to provide both a solid knowledge base and skill set that enable students to explore music independently with ease for their own enjoyment, well past their lessons, and to make that process as rewarding as possible. This includes lots of exploration of music, paced according to each individual student's needs, and includes specialized focus and supplementary music the student selects wherever possible.
Lessons generally include five components: songs from their lesson book
(1-3, depending on the student's level), technique, theory, supplementary pieces (including ear training) once the student is in Level 1, and learning games (because these do wonders for our brains).
I offer lessons for beginner through intermediate levels and select one of
the series listed below that best matches a student's interests and goals;
these help us explore music and build the skills that enable students to
play what they love:
-
Bastien Piano Basics
-
Alfred Basic Piano
-
Faber Piano Adventures
-
Royal Conservatory of Music
-
Alfred's Adult Piano Courses
-
Faber Adult Piano Adventures (All-in-One, Popular, & Christmas)
Supplementary music tracks to broaden this musical exploration and
provide students with as much intrinsic enjoyment of their piano practice
as possible, include:
-
Classical/Royal Conservatory
-
Contemporary Worship
-
Humns
-
Jazz
-
Movies/Showtunes
-
Popular
-
& Student Choice
If a student opts to choose their own supplementary pieces, they are
welcome to choose from my own music library, which includes access
to the Musescore collection, or they can source their own music that
we can incorporate into lessons.
We take creative approaches to learning because every brain and body is a little different; how I explain concepts, demonstrate technique, support the student in the lesson and their practice will shift as we find what works best for each individual. So, we usually do theory together so we can collaborate and I can find alternate ways to explain the concepts, rather than students having to figure it out on their own. We work through skills together until the student is as comfortable as possible before they need to practice on their own, break down new songs and tackle the most 'interesting' bits so they can't trip up the student and cause frustration later. I also provide video tutorials as needed and we always experiment with practice methods to find what supports the student best. Each student receives tailored practice notes so they have ways to practice that will support their learning - and parents know what their children need this way too!
We celebrate progress and make piano practice rewarding, recognising hard work with practice prizes for good practice habits, using games to tap into our brain's learning superpowers, giving lots of praise and encouragement in lessons, and a few bonus surprises throughout the year. We support parents too - you don't have to know piano or music theory to support your child in invaluable ways. We provide a growing resource library for parents, plus video tutorials on what a practice at their level should look like, and I'm always available for questions.
In-Home Lessons
I teach students from age 4 and up, and adults too! I offer lessons in my students' homes for Langley, Fort Langley, Cloverdale, Clayton, White Rock/South Surrey, Aldergrove, & Abbotsford. A piano or keyboard suitable for lessons must be available in your home for lessons & practice, and we will need a quiet area during the lesson time. Lessons can be attended by parents/guardians, siblings, and friends as long as they are encouraging observers and the student is comfortable; our primary goal is to foster the best learning environment possible during our lesson times.
Online Lessons
I also offer online lessons (via Skype & Zoom) also for students age 4 through adults. Online lessons have several advantages. Times can be more flexible as travel time isn't required (which also lowers your tuition fees); they foster more independence and good listening skills, so musicianship develops more quickly; and online lessons are available for anywhere with sufficient internet connection.
For students age 8 & under, a responsible adult must attend the lessons with them
to assist the student with following instructions, staying on task, technical troubleshooting, etc. until the student reaches that point of independence.
Just like in-person lessons, you will need a piano or keyboard suitable for lessons
and a quiet area during the lesson time.
Online lessons also require a device with a webcam, a large enough screen the student can see shared sheet music, demonstrated technique, etc. (usually an iPad
or laptop works best), a microphone that can pick up speech and the piano sufficiently, and sufficient sound and volume quality on your end that instruction and music comes through clearly. Most devices have all of this already built in,
but we can do test runs to confirm before your lessons start. I also provide
tutorial videos that will walk you through necessary audio settings to give you
the best experience in your lessons.
Lessons for Children & Teens
I offer lessons to children age 4 through all the teenage years. For younger students, we focus on having lots of fun, build practice habits through games, colorful books, songs that progressively develop skills at their own best pace, and we work towards students discovering the music they love and supplementing with pieces that make them excited to play piano. We gameify learning because it makes the whole learning process more enjoyable and far more effective. For older teens, the approach is similar except we usually get to add in those supplementary pieces much earlier and focus on the music they already enjoy, working in that intrinsic reward of practicing piano as soon as possible. Lessons for teens can also look more like the adult lessons, where their goals and interests drive the lesson content and we skill-build to support their musical preferences.
Adult Lessons
I offer tailored lessons for adult students, whether they are starting piano as a complete beginner or returning to lessons. Our goal to make learning piano deeply enjoyable and rewarding, even when it's challenging. Lessons are planned based on your particular goals and interests, so the skills we develop enable you to play what you love with ease.
I love using the Alfred Adult Piano series and the Faber Adult Piano series because they provide such excellent skill development with a fantastic song selection (Faber is particularly good if you are a complete beginner or you've been away from piano for a long time). I also have a constantly growing music library and access to Musescore.com, so there are tons of supplementary pieces for you to work with as well. As you progress, we get to focus increasingly on the music you love.
These lessons are paced for adults, but they are also self-paced; learning looks different for everyone and we will always adjust to your needs. I fully expect you will have weeks where practicing could not happen; no worries, we will practice together and give you the best start possible to your next week.
We will also focus on learning practice methods so you have genuinely workable approaches to support your learning - this makes playing piano so much more rewarding and fun. It will be challenging at times, but I am always going to believe in you, support you, cheer you on, and I promise it will make mastering those songs and skills so much sweeter. I want you to find as much joy and delight in piano as possible, and I am on your team to make that happen.
Piano Practice
Because of how our brains are designed and the physical requirements for developing these skills, it is almost universally recommended students practice 5-7 days per week. Regardless of age, aptitude, or talent, regular and frequent practice makes all the difference in skill-building, comprehension, and especially enjoyment.
For very young and beginner students, a practice is usually 5-15 minutes. For students in Level 1 and up, their practices should be approximately 20-60 minutes - quality will always count over quantity, which is why much of my teaching focuses on developing practice methods that serve students well.
Students under age 9 will need parental assistance with most if not all practices, and all students under 18 need parental support. Check out the Resources section for more information regarding piano practice.
And to provide a little extra incentive when developing good practice habits, and to help me identify and address any issues as quickly as possible, we use Piano Points for students under 18. We track practices all year and students can earn prizes simply by getting in the minimum recommended five full practices per week, with bonus prizes if they practice more frequently. This approach is not talent-based; it rewards effort, attention, and consistency which carry students further than any amount of talent in music.
Lesson Length & Scheduling
Lesson length for beginners and students under the age of 7 is generally 30 minutes. For students in Level 1 and higher lessons are 45-60 minutes depending on their goals and available practice time during the week.
Weekly lessons are available Monday to Friday, 10:00 am to 10:00 pm.
Clients who book weekly lessons September-June receive an 8% discount
on all lesson tuition fees.
If you are interested in bi-weekly or monthly lessons, they are available Monday to Friday 10:00 am - 3:00 pm and 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm.
Starting Lessons
I always do an interview with new clients and students prior to starting lessons. This gives me an opportunity to answer your questions and clarify your goals and needs, so I can tailor the lessons to serve the student well and match their interests wherever possible. Interviews are available
in-person and over the phone; just submit a registration form via the
menu above, and I'll contact you with available openings.
You can book up to four trial lessons to ensure we are a good fit before committing to a longer contract. Fees aren't due until your first booked lesson, and parents are most welcome to sit in on lessons and connect with me regarding any questions or needed support at the end of each lesson.

Clients receive a free lesson for each new client who books lessons with Bumblebee Piano based on their referral.
Clients are responsible for costs associated with obtaining & maintaining an appropriate instrument, any piano lesson & theory books, and supplementary equipment and resources such as metronomes, additional workbooks, and sheet music not included in my shared library. Piano lesson books, theory books, and metronomes cannot be shared between clients, so these need to be purchased separately. Required materials will be discussed well in advance, and most often the client has me pick up approved materials and reimburses me (I'm at the music stores all the time anyways).
Clients are also responsible for purchasing and setting up their instrument prior to the first lesson and keeping it in good working order. I can recommend local tuners for Langley, Abbotsford, and Surrey, but I am not qualified to tune your instrument for you :) To find out more about suitable pianos and keyboards for piano lessons, check out Vibrant Music's video here.
